ROBOTS Galore

With worldwide gross of over USD388 million*,
the success of the movie "i, Robot" was due to many factors,
not least among them the incredible visual development of the robots
by the production designer. Two years in the making, the robot's
appearance went through over 50 different designs until its final
incarnation: a sleek, transparent and comfortable-looking artificial
household assistant.*
The robot design,
the movieÕs success, and most of all, the legions of book fans,
have inspired the team at PopBox to license the "i, Robot"
movie property for creation of some exceptionally cool collectibles.
In the pipeline are three series of collectibles. First off the
automated production line is an AMAZING high quality replica of
NS-5 Sonny robot bust made of durable ABS plastic, tons of metal
parts, and an electronic light of feature!

Origin - "i, Robot"

"i, Robot" is one of the most recognized
titles in science fiction with numerous books and stories written
over the past 60 years. They stride across the pages of our lives,
inspiring awe among countless fans. Though these "i, Robot"
stories did not invent the concept of intelligent mechanical humanoid
Robots Ð they gave them new life, new meaning, and new dramatic
power.
In these pages were laid out the foundations
for our perceptions of these futuristic automatons. And, as time
brings the prospect of real robots ever closer, the vision of the
mechanical humanoid grows ever more relevant and ever more powerful.
These stories created a futuristic world where
robots walk alongside man. In that world, these robot men show us
our humanity, both in its greatness and in its limitations.
More than anything else, it is the ÒThree
LawsÓ of robotics that energize these stories of sophisticated ÒpositronicÓ
robots. The Three Laws remain the essential basis of robotics for
many writers Ð from Data of ÒStar Trek: The Next GenerationÓ to
the quirky Kryten from the cult television series ÒRed DwarfÓ Ð
and they remain a source of debate among legions of robotics scientists:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or,
through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by
human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First
Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as
long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second
Law.

From Stories to Hollywood Creativity

These same Three Laws, allied to the strength
and invention from these "i, Robot" stories, and the coming
reality of robotics, have embedded wonder in us as a species. Our
fascination with a future where robots and humans will co-exist
recently found new expression in the movie Òi, Robot.Ó
Many have tried to bring these ideas to life
through movies. Most notable was a screenplay by award-winning author,
Harlan Ellison, dubbed ÒThe greatest science fiction movie never
made.Ó Written in 1977, a lot of prominent writers felt it would
make a fantastic movie, but it was never made due to cost. However,
to our benefit, it was released a decade later as a graphic novel
called Òi, Robot: The Illustrated Screenplay.Ó
It was not until July 2004 that Òi, RobotÓ
finally hit the big silver screen. Twentieth Century Fox brought
the legend to movie theaters, with director Alex Proya ( Dark
City, The Crow ), a screenplay by Jeff Vintar/Akiva Goldsman,
and blockbuster actor Will Smith in the lead role. This version
uses many of the elements in the stories but was not an adaptation
of any specific one. Even so, it did exceedingly well, with over
USD145 million taken at the US box office, USD45 million (as of
23 Jan 05) in US video rentals, and USD198 million in international
box office receipts.*
The story is set in 2035, where Del Spooner
(Will Smith), a robot-phobic detective for the Chicago Police Department
investigates a possible homicide perpetrated by a uniquely individualized
robot called Sonny (Alan Tudyk). Working alongside robot psychiatrist
Dr Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), Spooner discovers that there
is a far greater threat that affects all mankind.
